The Girl on the Train by
Paula Hawkins
I may be unreasonably harsh
on this story but it happened to fall under a couple of my pet peeves as a
reader. One is the Unlikeable Character. Now we, as readers, encounter them
often. Especially in mysteries. However this was my first time having to have
an alcoholic with blackouts, who may or may not be a threatening stalker, also
be the narrator of the story.
Which brings us pet peeve
number two… the Unreliable Narrator. Few stories can work this successfully. I
won’t say if this one does. The hype surrounding “Girl on the Train” compares
it to “Gone Girl” so I immediately had expectations that weren’t necessarily
fulfilled. Sometimes the media hype can ruin a book.
It wasn’t necessarily a bad
story. Maybe it deserves 3 stars and a discussion of what did and didn’t work,
instead? If you do read it, tell me what you think. :)
