Book Review #5 - The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

*2 Stars*

I may be unreasonably harsh on this story but it happened to fall under a couple of my pet peeves as a reader. One is the Unlikeable Character. Now we, as readers, encounter them often. Especially in mysteries. However this was my first time having to have an alcoholic with blackouts, who may or may not be a threatening stalker, also be the narrator of the story.

Which brings us pet peeve number two… the Unreliable Narrator. Few stories can work this successfully. I won’t say if this one does. The hype surrounding “Girl on the Train” compares it to “Gone Girl” so I immediately had expectations that weren’t necessarily fulfilled. Sometimes the media hype can ruin a book.

It wasn’t necessarily a bad story. Maybe it deserves 3 stars and a discussion of what did and didn’t work, instead? If you do read it, tell me what you think.  :)

The Cat Came Back...

I live at the end of a mile long country road, which is also where I grew up. Where it was mostly us and a two-hundred acre farm, my parents, grandparents, cattle, horses, cats, dog, and whatever other varmints would occasionally appear or pass through.

I moved back not too long ago. Living there is how I found my cat, Delilah, who appeared in our window around eleven years ago. It’s also how my parents got both of their cats. One was a rescue stray that was almost starved to death that we nursed back to health. The other was a kitten of a cat that appeared around the same time as my cat. The end of the road is popular for drop offs of all kinds.

Recently another cat has happened by. He was wild and mean, and wouldn't let anyone near him. I could hear the catfights when our cats got near him. After a few weeks, he appeared on my porch and I sat near him, still and not moving until he came near me and let me pet him. He head-butted me and rubbed against me like an old friend. Until I moved, when he quickly attacked and bit my hand! I still have vampire like marks on my palm. I started leaving food out and he waits for it morning and night. Anytime I look outside. He’s there, staring me in the eyes.

Last weekend, he got into a fight with Patch, my parents’ cat. My father set out a cage trap and caught my wild cat, who I now look forward to seeing every day. It was heartbreaking to see an animal so terrified about being caught in a trap, but I didn't want our pets hurt either. Dad took him away and let him out near a farm he knew had other barn cats.

That was two days ago. Last night I came home to find a big, black tom cat waiting happily and hungrily on my porch. Part of me is jubilant and yet my heart aches. For so little as some dry food, a spot on my porch, and some petting, this kitty was willing to walk MILES to come back to me. Animals are such amazing, loving, and loyal creatures.

Book Review #4 - The Look of Love

"The Look of Love" by Sarah Jio

*3 stars*

20893363

Sarah Jio's novels are a cozy place to go after finishing an intense, dark thriller. I'm not the most romantic of people, but I’m a sucker for magical realism, so that kept me intrigued with the story of Jane and her gift/ability to see true love.

Parts of the story were a bit cheesy, some parts were slightly predictable, but others were just sweet and heartwarming... I may have shed a few tears, even though the cynic in me hates to admit it.

I can't say I would or wouldn't recommend this novel. It was set in Seattle, which is one of my favorite cities that I've visited. Additional points there. Overall, the novel reminds me of the movie "Valentine’s Day" with all the interwoven stories of couples and the flower shop.

Cute, sweet and enjoyable.

Book Review #3 - Life or Death

Book Review #3 - Life or Death (by Michael Robotham)

*5 Stars*

Life or Death

I immediately grabbed this title (an ARC from NetGalley), seeing Michael Robotham's name on the cover. Having read all of the Joe O'Loughlin series, I always look forward to more by Robotham. I was *almost* disappointed this was not one in the series... UNTIL I began to read it.

Why would someone like Audie Spencer Palmer escape from prison the day before he was to be released? How could he serve ten years in prison and never mention the seven million dollars he was put away for stealing? And beaten and threatened for on a daily basis?

"Life or Death" unfolds incredibly, page by page, chapter by chapter... revealing just enough that the reader *thinks* they know what will happen next. Only Robotham takes those predictions and blows them out of the water. This was probably one of the best mystery/suspense novels that I have read in a long, long time.

Conclusion: Simply amazing! I will recommend this to all who will listen. Also, I hope Robotham considers a follow up with the small, but mighty Detective Desiree Furness. She is a wonderful change from Joe O'Loughlin.

Book Review #2 - My Sunshine Away

Book Review #2 - My Sunshine Away (M.O. Walsh)

*2.5 Stars*

My Sunshine Away

I received an ARC copy of “My Sunshine Away”  through NetGalley.

I wobbled between 2-3 stars, and between reading and giving up throughout most of the book. It's told from the point of view of an obsessed teenage boy who is a suspect in the rape of a neighborhood girl in 1987. It went on and on with teen angst and obsession.
Every time I started to quit, I realized how well written it was and kept going. I'd already seen buzz about it on lists of books for 2015.

If you think like a teenage boy, (or like to) you might like it. Otherwise, I'd say, pass.

Book Review #1 - The Magician's Lie

Book Review #1 - The Magician's Lie (Greer Macallister)

*Four Stars*

With a blend of magic, murder, mystery, and history, The Magician's Lie was an excellent read. I loved the telling of Ada's life story, especially her time at the Biltmore and becoming a magician. A successful and savvy businesswoman in 1900 is exciting to read about. Ray seems a little over the top in the crazy department, but I guess all good villains go that way. The ending was slightly predictable but the story was enjoyable so it wasn't a letdown.
Overall, I'd recommend this to our patrons. Especially fans of magic and historical fiction.

Welcome to the Blog!

Hello!

Welcome to my Blog!

As the title warns you, this is the "Rambling Reader" so be ready to hear book reviews and recommendations. I needed an outlet beyond Goodreads to test my book reviewing skills. I also wanted the opportunity to try to blog again. I'm not sure who all will read or follow this, so for now I'll attempt to stay at least somewhat anonymous.

As my ramblings go, you may see pictures or pins of various things I find fun or creative. I don't even know what all to expect! :) My goal is to write more and to have fun with it. Feel free to provide feedback and give your own recommendations!

Welcome and Happy 2015!
:)
